Recently, there was an article that the mind had been circling around, but abandon since there was no response from the local Community Development Department; and this citizen journalist is just that – a citizen.  No press credentials equals no response, since that would be rocking the boat.

The question asked was, “How prepared is the city of Richmond for an extreme weather brought on by climate change?”  Seems like a silly question for someone in the city/surrounding county to be asking, because there are about 110 miles, give or take, between the city and the ocean.  However, the city of Richmond has a mighty river that has caused havoc on  the city patrons before and more than able to do it again.  This seemed like a logical question, “extreme weather.”

The news today, coming from Reuters, Prepare for climate change, U.S. report warns W.House, by Richard Cowan, points out the exact question, that the city of Richmond (and her surrounding counties) are not paying attention too.  Note, the city has a volunteer section for patrons to practice drills in the event of a natural disaster, to help in a crisis.

The question becomes, “why aren’t the cities, across the country, preparing?”  Maybe some are, but not enough to limit the possible devastation of extreme weather.  The extreme weather issues are nothing new, drought, fire, floods, lighting, tornados, earthquakes, BUT, there appears to be a lack of forward thinking.  Err?

Granted, the debate was going along the lines of — “Yes, there are budget shortfalls, crime, and bickering amongst each other; however, the responsibility for the city patrons comes first.  That it does not matter the race, age, or political affiliation, because extreme weather does not care about the victim.  Extreme weather has no boundaries; therefore, it comes down to people working together, now.”

Finally, it is incredible to see a report presented to let others prepare and get the job done.  The lack of follow through, on any government level, should have citizens pissed.  (Will there be follow through here?? A guess, probably not.) All of the green technology, or just plain green lifestyle, would generate unbelievable results. (Look at the Eco-friendly German town as an example.) The implementation of the two would reduce crime, poverty, and hunger; thus, it would allow a city to be prepared and work together.  The bickering of balancing budgets has been an ongoing “who done it” for years. This is well out the reach for a citizen (though we vote), and it is never going to be right, or at least maintained.

Now the question becomes – not if but when – this will start to happen, because the science is pointing to a need to prepare.  Extreme weather has been gearing up across the nation, and the Earth is changing right before our eyes. Whether there could be an acceleration of events or not, the people owe it to each other to be aware, set differences aside, and work together. The future city (where ever one may live) will thank us, the patrons.
