The Breet Report – Giant Pandas Are Back In The News
A couple of months ago, I attempted to email myself a link to an Assignment Earth video. As the title suggests, Assignment Earth reviews different Earth aspects – plants, people, or animals – on the Earth. Usually, the videos are short snippets, with helpful/educational information for anyone on the go.
This Assignment Earth video was an interview with China’s panda reproduction facility. The interview revealed startlingly information about the eventual genetic death of the panda. Currently, the pandas are in the “bottleneck” of the genetic evolution of their species. (With help from human interactions of course, so it is hard to say if the species would have faced this or not…anyway…) The news spread like wildfire for about two days, even to the point of a scientist saying, “let them die.” (Yikes.) Well, pandas are back in the news again.
The giant panda is still trying to be saved by having breeding pairs in captivity. China has worked hard on this project since females do not breed often due to how they were created. (Oh! Yes, I said the “create” word.) Try as we (meaning scientist) like to use, and often times succeed, genetic enhancements, fertilization techniques, and other arsenal within the community – often times letting nature be nature – will restore the balance of a species. OR… Kind of seems like this could be sciences “holy grail,” if they were able to get pandas to mate, without separating them (source 1) to push it along.
With any luck, may the world will not lose another species before it’s due time.
