Local Beach Area Jan. 2008, by Rachel Breet Richmond
After months and months of waiting, it is official now – the seals can stay on the beach in California!
“A judge ruled Friday that harbor seals that have colonized the cove in La Jolla for more than a decade can remain there. That overruled an earlier decision to have the city remove the seals because their waste and bacteria was dangerous for humans.” – From the Associated Press, Judge says seals can stay in California cove, San Diego, Saturday 14, 2009 -
Remember – California is sending out I.O.U.’s to the taxpayers for anyone that was going to get a return. What the city wanted was $10,000 a day (that is $3,650,000 a year) to be set aside to have a person walk up and down the beach with a bull horn to shoo away the seals. (Yup, wrote about it here on The Breet Report.) With modern technology though, the approach would surely change over time….anyway….
Now, there are citizens who do not like the seals being present on the beach cove. The smell is probably horrible; however, they are animals that do poop. We poop, they poop, it is nothing but poop. The idea that a clean up project is going to help the cove be clean enough for children to play on is crazy. It took years for germs to build up (literally everywhere if ya think about it) and it would take years for it to be semi-okay to get back on the beach.
The added bonus to this is – without realizing it (in the 30’s) the area made a darn good man-made habit for wild animals. This is serendipitous and quiet lovely. At least the animals have a habit, since the beaches that were used by them anyway before have been developed over. That is what caused the seals to come there in the first place. Everything has a home and needs a home.
